How Entrepreneur Magazine Changed My Business:
About 9 years ago I had a partner, and she and I started a goodie bag business. At the time the company's name was Buzz Bags. The concept was brand new and no one had ever written about it. Lucky for me, my partner (who like me was a former journalist) had reached out to a friend at Entrepreneur Magazine, and pitched our little company. The week the magazine came out, we received a phone call from United Airlines. The phone call, went something like this: "Hi Jane, I am calling from United Airlines, I read about you in Entrepreneur Magazine. Do you think we can schedule a meeting? We can fly to New York to meet you when you are available." The meeting went extremely well. The executives were wonderful and we of course became their first gifting company. We worked on the launch of their p.s. service, the new gateway to Nagoya, Valentine's Day, even when they flew Oscar® to Hollywood and so many more! Being featured in the magazine literally brought us into the six figure world! And that was only the beginning of our relationship with the magazine. For the past 4 or five years, Madison & Mulholland has also been working with their special events providing gifting bags for the attendees of many of their events....and we continue. My passion for the executives and the editors is genuine. we have an amazing working relationship and we are now looking forward to January 2011. Let this event be the start of an important relationship.
But, don't jsut send product, don't just go there, follow up, be aggressive, get your message out!
4 MISTAKES People make when Providing Products for Gift Bags!
Mistake # 1: Many people provide gift certificates or products that are either irrelevant to the consumer, or for a product or service that consumer can get somewhere else for less. (seriously are you going to take action on 10% off or 40% off?)
MISTAKE #2: Company's usually forget to create a reason as to why the consumer WANTS the product. We do not usually buy on need, but rather on what we want or what we feel we must have.
Mistake #3: Did you forget why your product is better than anything else on the market? Most people just forget to answer that question. Today you have so many choices, if you are going to go through the effort to "gift" something ...why not add a compelling reason for a consumers to choose your product the next time I go shopping!
Mistake#4: Did you follow up with a press release? Did you blog about it? Did YOU call the media's attention as to WHY your product was chosen? Did you put up relevant photos on your site? A gift bag is just a tool for you to exploit! Use it...
